The Cleveland Guardians are in the middle of an extremely difficult game despite holding a lead over the Detroit Tigers as of this story’s writing. Angel Martinez and Chase DeLauter exited with injuries early in the game. According to Zack Meisel of The Athletic, Jose Ramirez later exited with an apparent injury as well. Not only did the Guardians lose three players due to injury, but with two of them being outfielders, Rhys Hoskins is playing outfield for the first time since 2018, according to Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com.
Ramirez’s apparent injury has not been revealed as of this story’s writing.
While he is not having his best season, Ramirez is still one of the best third baseman in the game. The 33-year-old is currently hitting .239/.339/.418 across 72 games played. He has also recorded 10 home runs and 18 doubles to go along with a league leading 24 stolen bases.
The Guardians lead the Tigers at the moment. Cleveland entered the contest with a 38-33 record and trailing the Chicago White Sox by a half-game in the American League Central standings. The White Sox are currently losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers, though, so Cleveland could take over first place in the division once again on Saturday.
While a win would be promising, losing three players to injury in one day is obviously far from ideal. It has been a brutal game for the ball club from that standpoint. Updates on Jose Ramirez’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
