Sabrina Ionescu drops huge injury update for Mystics game

The New York Liberty are currently one of the hottest teams in the WNBA having won six straight to move to the top of the Eastern Conference standings at 9-4. And they are set to get major help for their upcoming game against the Washington Mystics on Sunday. All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu is set to return from injury as per Madeline Kenney of The New York Post.

Sabrina Ionescu has been sidelined due to a back injury and has missed the last seven games for the Liberty. She’s been limited to only one game so far this season due to recurring injury issues. Ionescu sustained an ankle injury during preseason that delayed her 2026 debut.

She returned to the lineup on May 24 against the Dallas Wings finishing with 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes. She shot 4-of-15 from the field, 2-of-5 from the 3-point line and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. But immediately after that game she was ruled out due to said back injury.

The former Oregon star has been one of the best point guards in the WNBA since the Liberty made her the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft. She helped lead the team to the 2024 championship, the first in franchise history.

Last season, Ionescu played in 38 out of 44 games at a little over 31 minutes per game. She averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 40.1 percent shooting from the field, 29.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 93.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

With the Liberty finally getting healthy, they’re starting to look like the title contender many thought they would be.
