The San Antonio Spurs will attempt to stay alive in the NBA Finals when they host the New York Knicks in Game 5. While one of the primary goals of the Spurs will be to find a way to unleash superstar Victor Wembanyama and help him produce on a consistent basis for 48 minutes, there is a bit of controversy as the two teams prepare to play in San Antonio.
Wembanyama was not on the court in Games 3 and 4 while the National Anthem was performed. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson was asked about it at Saturday’s media session prior to the game, and he tried to downplay Wembanyama’s absence.
“I think there’s plenty of players not on the floor during the anthem,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if that’s habit, superstition, bathroom, but I don’t foresee anyone looking into it at all.”
In earlier games during the postseason, Wembanyama made it to the floor for the National Anthem, but he stood with his head bowed and his arms crossed in front of him.
The Knicks will take a 3-1 lead into Game 5 of the series. New York rallied from a 29-point deficit in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden with a 107-106 victory. The record comeback set off a delirious celebration among the team’s boisterous fans, and the players were overjoyed as well.
The pattern of the series has seen the Spurs grab double-digit leads in each of the first four games. The Knicks were able to respond with comeback victories in Games 1, 2 and 4, while the Spurs held on for their only victory in the series in Game 3.
