The New York Knicks are trying to close out the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5, but it hasn’t been easy. There’s been a lot of physical play throughout the game, which has called for several flagrant fouls.
One of the fouls that the refs have missed is Victor Wembanyama landing in Jalen Brunson’s shooting space in the third quarter. No one on the Knicks side was happy about the call, including Stephen A. Smith, who went on a mini-rant on social media.
“It’s so painfully obvious that the [Knicks] ain’t getting any calls tonight. Especially against [Wemby]. It’s utterly ridiculous, but perfectly okay, nevertheless! Why? Because all it means is that the [Knicks] have to go out and take the damn crown. It will not be given to them. So go get it, d—-t!” Smith wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
On the play, Jalen Brunson made a 3-pointer, and once he landed, Wembanyama was in his space, which caused him to fall and stay on the floor for a moment. If the refs had called that foul, there’s a good chance that Wembanyama would’ve been assessed a flagrant and suspended for Game 6.
The good thing for the Spurs is that he didn’t get called for the foul, which would’ve had huge implications for them in the next game, missing their best player.
The refs had been pretty good about calling fouls in this series, so it was a surprise that they missed an obvious call such as that one.
