The New York Knicks are NBA champions, for the first time in more than 50 years. After years of pain and frustration, Knicks fans are celebrating in the streets of the Big Apple. New York star Josh Hart has a simple wish for everyone after his team won the Finals on Saturday night.
“FROM NOW ON ADDRESS ME AS CHAMP!” Hart posted to X, formerly Twitter. That post got 25,000 reposts on X as of Sunday morning.
Hart also sent out a message to those fans who took to the streets to celebrate in the New York City night.
“NEW YORK PLEASE BE SAFE!!!!!!” Hart added in a separate post.
Knicks fever has swept all over the city, as the team made the NBA Finals this season for the first time since 1999. That season, the Knicks ironically lost to the San Antonio Spurs. This year’s championship gave New York a little revenge.
Hart was a key part of the team’s run to the Finals. In Game 5 on Saturday night, the guard scored 13 points in 39 minutes of action against the Spurs. Hart is a versatile player; he has spent time on the floor playing both guard and forward.
The Knicks will be honored by the city on Thursday. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced there will be a ticker-tape parade, honoring the team.
“For more than 50 years, New Yorkers have waited for this moment. Through near misses, heartbreak and a hope that every year could be our year, this city never stopped believing in the Knicks. And this team fulfilled that hope with grit, resilience and heart — just like the five boroughs itself,” Mamdani said, per the NBA.
Knicks fans hope this championship is just the start of some more big moments to come.
