The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in more than 50 years on Saturday. The last time New York had the honor of taking the title was in 1973. Two players on that team were watching Saturday, to see the Knicks win yet again.
Those players are Walt Frazier, and Earl “the Pearl” Monroe. They were both overjoyed to see the Knicks on top once again.
“I praise God that I was there in 1973, and I’m still here to see another championship,” Frazier said, per Spectrum News, following Game 5. “….We are very proud with what the guys have accomplished.”

Monroe also spoke with the outlet, and shared his excitement about this New York team.
“They came alive in the second alive in the second half…able to take adversity. They did a great job down the stretch,” Monroe said to Spectrum News in an interview.
Monroe has been watching closely as the Knicks made their run to the Finals. Watching this year’s team made him think about what his club was like back in 1973. That year, New York defeated the Los Angeles Lakers for the title.
“We were part of the fabric of what the city was all about, and that was a good thing,” Monroe said, per The New York Times. “We were Knicks. But we were New Yorkers as well.”
Monroe knows how important this franchise is to the city of New York.
“This city doesn’t rock unless the Knicks are doing it,” Monroe said. “As great as all the other teams are, this is the Knicks’ town.”
New York City is celebrating the Knicks. The city will hold a ticker-tape parade for the team on Thursday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced.
