On Saturday evening, the San Antonio Spurs saw their 2025-26 season come to an end with a Game 5 loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. The Spurs’ second to last win of the season ended up being their Game 7 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, which got them to the Finals in the first place.
Thunder fans have been “hate watching” the Spurs throughout these Finals, including Clemente Almanza of Thunder Wire, who has been known to take an Oklahoma City-themed approach to his reporting style.
“Wembanyama shot 42.3% in the NBA Finals. (Chet) Holmgren shot 51% in the WCF,” pointed out Almanza on X, formerly Twitter.
Of course, this stat is wildly misleading, as Holmgren outright refused to shoot the ball for much of the conference finals against Wembanyama, while Wemby was largely aggressive hunting for his shot in the Finals against the Knicks. In fact, Holmgren shot just two times in the decisive Game 7 loss for the Thunder, but technically shot 50 percent from the game.
However, Almanza and other Thunder fans are looking for any ways to convince themselves that they aren’t as far off from a championship as they currently appear, having lost to a team that then got smoked in five games in the Finals.
This offseason, the Thunder seem more likely to retool around the margins than make any drastic moves, and many have thought that Oklahoma City, if healthy, wouldn’t have experienced the same late-game lapses on the NBA Finals stage that the Spurs did, constantly melting down in front of the more veteran Knicks.
In any case, it should be an interesting offseason in Oklahoma City.
