As the Boston Red Sox’s 2026 season has been nothing short of a disappointment, there is a conversation about potential changes the team will make to improve. While rumors around the Red Sox will continue throughout the season and in the winter, this MLB insider discusses the job status of chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
President of the team Sam Kennedy would say on “The Greg Hill Show” that firing Breslow for the disappointing season is “not on the table,” further saying how he is “working as hard as anybody” to figure out how to get Boston back on track. While Bob Nightengale of USA Today acknowledges that, he would inform that “no one in baseball believes” that notion.
“The Boston Red Sox ownership insists that Craig Breslow, president of baseball operations, is in no immediate danger of being fired. It’s just that no one in baseball believes them, believing they’ll be looking for his replacement this winter,” Nightengale wrote.
“The Red Sox already fired manager Alex Cora and six of his coaches after going 10-17,” Nightengale continued. “They have since gone 18-22, and in danger of being the first Red Sox team since 1933 to have 50 losses by July 4.”
The Red Sox have fired executives quickly in the past
When it comes to changes the Red Sox have already made this season, firing manager Alex Cora and other coaches was a move that the team was hoping could bring some jolt, but it hasn’t been fruitful yet. With people wondering if Breslow could be next on the chopping block, Nightengale would bring up the history that Boston has on letting go of executives quickly, as Breslow is in his third season.
“The Red Sox also have a recent history of pulling the plug quickly on executives, firing Ben Cherington, Dave Dombrowski, and Chaim Bloom within four seasons, including Dombrowski just 10 months after winning the World Series,” Nightengale wrote.
At any rate, it remains to be seen if the Red Sox look to move on from Breslow, as that change would likely come in the offseason, as Nightengale mentioned, as the team is currently 29-39.
