The New York Knicks won the NBA Finals on Saturday, over the San Antonio Spurs. Throughout the Finals, the NYPD has had to arrest Knicks fans during postgame celebrations. That was no different on Saturday, as New York won the NBA championship for the first time in more than 50 years.
At least 63 people were arrested after Game 5 by the NYPD, the New York Post reported on Sunday.
“Amid the mayhem, 10 members of the NYPD were injured, including one officer who was struck by a glass bottle,” the outlet reported.
Following Knicks watch parties during the Finals, fans have had confrontations with NYPD officers. There have been reports of property damage. On Saturday night, things unfortunately turned violent.
“The charges include assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a gun, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, cops said,” the Post reported.
NYPD officials say fights broke out as the game wore on. Some were between fans, while others involved law enforcement officers who were trying to keep the peace.
“As the game progressed and then following the game, the crowds became increasingly destructive, and there were many incidents of incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior,” the NYPD said in a statement to Gothamist.
The NYPD has more challenges in front of them. On Thursday, the city will host a ticker-tape parade for the Knicks. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made that announcement following Game 5. On Sunday, the city is releasing more information about security for the parade.
The Knicks’ championship is the first for the franchise since 1973. New York had last competed in the NBA Finals in 1999. The Knicks lost that year to the San Antonio Spurs.
