The Minnesota Timberwolves are in the early stages of what figures to be a highly important offseason for the future direction of the franchise. On Saturday, the Timbrewolves sat back and watched with the rest of the NBA world as former team center Karl-Anthony Towns won an NBA championship with the New York Knicks, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games.
After the game, Timberwolves fans were quick to hop on social media and clown former team forward Jimmy Butler, who reportedly had problems with both Towns and Andrew Wiggins, both of whom now have rings, during his stint with Minnesota.
“Go f*** yourself, Jimmy Butler,” wrote one fan on Bluesky.
“Number of NBA championships: Karl-Anthony Towns: 1, Andrew Wiggins: 1, Jimmy Butler: 0,” wrote another.
Of course, neither Towns nor Wiggins was the number one option on the team with which they won a championship, while Butler was the clear alpha on the Miami Heat teams he dragged to the NBA Finals earlier this decade.
Still, Timberwolves fans weren’t exactly thinking in terms of context when looking to dunk on Butler, whose tenure with the franchise ended in ugly fashion back during the 2018-19 season.
Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are looking for ways to catch up to the rest of the NBA title contenders this offseason, and there don’t appear to be many clear avenues of doing so. The team will likely have a hard time finding a good trade for Julius Randle after his playoff struggles, and although Rudy Gobert remains an elite defender, it’s hard to tell if he figures into the Timberwolves’ long-term plans moving forward.
Still, as long as Anthony Edwards is employed by the team, the Timberwolves figure to be at least on the outskirts of the contention zone out West.
