Reds’ Hunter Greene to begin making rehab starts after elbow injury

The Cincinnati Reds have been waiting the return of star pitcher Hunter Greene. Greene has missed the entire season so far, due to an injury. The Reds hurler is on the mend, per the latest injury update.

“Hunter Greene will start a rehab assignment in Arizona on June 18,” reporter Charlie Goldsmith posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday.

Greene is dealing with elbow problems. He has yet to make a start or post any stats during the 2026 Major League Baseball season.

“Due to the length of his absence, Greene could need most of his 30-day rehab window to get fully stretched out, though manager Terry Francona said earlier this month that the right-hander is expected to return from the 60-day injured list at some point prior to the All-Star break in mid-July,” CBS Sports reported.

Greene is an effective pitcher who has been an anchor to the Reds rotation. During the 2025 season, the pitcher posted a 2.76 ERA with a 0.94 WHIP. He posted seven victories for a Reds team that made the MLB Playoffs.

Greene started throwing again in recent weeks. He loved how he felt.

“I was really happy because my accuracy was actually really, really good,” Greene said at the end of May, per MLB.com. “I only threw my fastball and my splitter. But it was a good feeling, because I wasn’t surprised — because of my work leading up to the bullpen.”

This is the second season in a row where the pitcher has missed significant time. He started just 19 games during the 2025 campaign after suffering a groin strain. In 2024, Greene was named an All-Star.

The Reds need Greene. Due to injuries, Cincinnati has struggled in recent weeks. The team is 33-36 on the season and last in the National League Central.

The Reds are in action Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
