The New York Knicks are 2026 NBA Champions for the first time in 53 years and there’s arguably no one happier about the win than iconic filmmaker and lifelong Knicks’ superfan Spike Lee. The Brooklyn native was just 16 years old when the Knicks won their last championship a now at 69 years of age, he was able to witness a Knicks’ championship first-hand with their 4-1 NBA Finals win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Lee certainly had a long list of friends and family to call in expressing his elation following the Game 5 clinching win from San Antonio, but he specifically made a call to longtime friend and business partner Michael Jordan on a count of their iconic “Jordan and Mars Blackmon” campaign from the late 1980’s to early 1990’s.
Mars Blackmon was an alter ego created by Spike Lee to help promote Nike’s signature Air Jordan sneaker line under the Chicago Bulls’ great. The recognizable “It’s gotta be the shoes!” tagline became iconic in Nike’s marketing of the Air Jordan 4 sneakers, still widely considered the best shoes Air Jordan and Nike ever dropped.
Following the Knicks’ championship win, Lee gave Michael Jordan a call posing as his infamous alter ego from the 90’s.

Of course, Michael Jordan wasn’t around to pick up the phone given his busy schedule as the greatest to ever do it, but Spike Lee wasted no time in leaving a voicemail which later turned into the perfect Air Jordan campaign, 38 years after their official Nike Air Jordan spot in 1988.
“Yo Mike, wassup it’s Mars Blackmon. I know it’s been a long time we haven’t talked in a minute…the New York Knicks are world champions, call me back!”
Whether or not Michael Jordan returned the call will forever be left in Spike Lee’s ever-growing lore, but it’s safe to say Lee got all the satisfaction he needed throughout the Knicks’ legendary 2026 NBA Playoffs where they went 16-3 en route to the most important title in their franchise’s history.
