With the New York Knicks winning the NBA title after beating the San Antonio Spurs in five games, many are crowning star Jalen Brunson with a ton of flattering titles, such as being the key to the first title in the franchise’s history in 54 years. As the Knicks celebrate the championship win, Brunson would reflect on previous decisions, such as taking a smaller contract, so the team can build around him.
Brunson signed a four-year, $156.5 million contract, but sacrificed $113 million in signing it early, so that New York could use the money to acquire other players, leading to the team being able to add Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. Speaking to Malika Andrews of ESPN, he was asked if leaving that much money was worth it, now that a title has been won, leading to a truthful answer.
“100 percent worth it. 100 percent worth it,” Brunson said. “Even if we didn’t achieve this, I feel like being able to do that and grind and go on a journey to try and achieve it, it would have been worth it as well, but this is definitely the turn on top.”
Knicks’ Jalen Brunson on thinking of pursuing the next championship
Brunson’s team-friendly contract looks much better now that the Knicks won the championship, but it shows the character of the star guard, who now adds a title to his impressive resume. Having already cemented himself as an all-time New York player, Andrews would ask if he is “hungry” for the next title, and while it does, he’s also trying to take in the moment.
“After the parade. Yeah, I think I’ve done a decent job of being able to not look ahead, not look past anything, staying in the moment. I’m going to try and enjoy this for a little bit and, then once it’s time to get back to work, it’s back to work,” Brunson said.
Brunson and the rest of the Knicks will enjoy the current title win, but there’s no denying that the team doesn’t want to make it a one-year stint at the NBA Finals and winning championships.
