Kendrick Perkins names Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama, 2 others ‘untouchables’ after Finals loss

Kendrick Perkins didn’t hold back on the San Antonio Spurs’ roster construction featuring Victor Wembanyama following their loss to the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals.

Wembanyama led San Antonio to its first NBA Finals appearance since 2014. However, they were unable to hold leads as they lost to the Knicks after five games, losing Game 5 on Saturday night. Perkins provided his thoughts on what San Antonio must do to improve the roster on ESPN’s SportsCenter.

“They’re going to have to find another place for [Fox]. Number one, he makes too much money, and number two, he’s getting in the way of Dylan Harper. That spot belongs to Dylan Harper. We saw last night, and throughout the course of this series, that he was their most consistent offensive player in on that team,” Perkins said.

“And when you think about De’Aaron Fox and the money that he’s making, forget the fact that he struggled throughout the course of the NBA Finals, because he did have some bright spots. Dylan Harper is just that dude, and there’s three guys that I’m looking at on the San Antonio Spurs that are untouchable, Wemby, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. The rest of the roster needs to be reevaluated.”

What’s next for Victor Wembanyama, Spurs this offseason

Kendrick Perkins was tough on his outlook towards the Spurs. Victor Wembanyama has incredible talent as one of the best stars in the league, but he will need more strength in his supporting cast.

San Antonio entered the championship series with significant momentum, dethroning the 2025 champions Oklahoma City Thunder in the West Finals after seven games. However, New York was difficult challenge for them as they fell in five games. This includes the Spurs losing all three of their home contests in Games 1, 2 and 5.

Wembanyama was firm as the leading scorer with 26 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 blocks, 2.6 assists, and one steal per game. Stephon Castle came next with 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, while Dylan Harper provided 18 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest.

The Spurs enter the offseason with optimism but have questions to answer. They have plenty of cap space, presenting chances for them to land key free agents.
