Hurricanes’ Jaccob Slavin joins Ken Morrow in Stanley Cup, USA Olympic Gold history

For the first time since 2006, the Carolina Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup. They defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final, winning in six games and capping the series with a 3-0 victory at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It marks their first title since defeating the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in the 2006 Stanley Cup Final in the first season following the infamous 2004-05 lockout.

And among the players most responsible for the Carolina victory is defenseman Jaccob Slavin, who has been a mainstay on their blue line for a decade now. Slavin was also named to the Team USA roster for the 2026 Milan Olympics, where he helped them win a historic gold medal in a stunning upset victory over Team Canada in late February.

In doing so, he joined former Team USA gold medal winner Ken Morrow as the only two American-born players to have won an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same season.

“Only two USA-born players have ever won a Gold medal and Stanley Cup in the same season: -Ken Morrow (1980) -Jaccob Slavin (2026),” wrote Rob Taub on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Pretty damn impressive.”

Slavin, who was selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round (120th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft, has appeared in 784 career regular season games and has scored 56 goals with 251 assists. He’s also tallied nine goals and 35 assists in 104 career games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

This spring, Slavin appeared in 18 postseason games, registering four assists along with a plus-three rating.
