The 2026 season has not been very kind to Logan Webb and the San Francisco Giants. Webb had struggled to begin the new campaign, and his struggles came at the worst time for a Giants team that couldn’t find its rhythm on both sides of the ball as they fall way below the .500 mark. But he has since righted the ship, and on Sunday, he threw a marvelous game for his team in a 5-1 win over a Chicago Cubs team that has now crashed down to earth after a torrid start to the season.
Webb came on the mound to pitch the third game of the Giants-Cubs weekend series, with the former having lost the first two games despite being at home. The ace refused to let his team get swept, as he threw an eight-inning gem — shutting out the Cubs after allowing just seven hits while striking out seven and walking none.
In so doing, Webb now has the second-most starts in Giants history with eight or more innings while allowing no walks, with nine, as per Sarah Langs of MLB.com. He tied Matt Cain for that distinction.
The all-time leader for most such starts (14) in Giants franchise history is Madison Bumgarner, the legendary lefty who played a crucial part in three title-winning squads.
Bumgarner was a part of the Giants’ stacked rotation that famously won in the even years of 2010, 2012, and 2014, and he especially starred in their most recent World Series title-winning team, when he was dominant all postseason long in a run that culminated in an epic relief effort in Game 7 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.
Webb, much like Bumgarner, is a workhorse on the mound, and his availability means so much to a Giants team that is now looking to bring itself out of the dregs.
