After a 9-19 start to the season, the Philadelphia Phillies decided to move on from manager Rob Thomson. But since his firing, the Phillies have gone 29-14 and would earn a Wild Card spot with their 38-33 record.
While he may no longer be behind the bench, Thomson has been watching Philadelphia’s rise. Ultimately, he is rooting for the success of players are personnel he spent so much time around, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
“I watch every game that I can,” Thomson said in a text message. “When you have built relationships and been through the things that this group has been through, you don’t stop cheering for them. At least I don’t.
“I think that in a lot of situations where managers get fired, most wish that they had a little more time but (there are) no lingering frustrations,” he continued. “You can call it whatever you want, but the fact is that the team has been playing so much better since the change and they are back to who they are!!”
In Thompson’s first year with the franchise, he led Philadelphia to a National League pennant victory. The Phillies made the playoffs in the first four years of his tenure before his firing. But the franchise was ousted from the NLDS 3-1 in back-to-back seasons. Coupled with his slow start, Philadelphia decided it was time for a change.
The decision has been fruitful as the Phillies are now back in playoff contention. Thomson may no longer be leading the charge, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t on board with continued Philadelphia success.
