Given the iconic Billy Joel residency at Madison Square Garden, it’s not surprising that the “Piano Man” has a soft spot for New York Knicks owner James Dolan after his team’s championship win.
The “My Life” singer took to Instagram to congratulate the Knicks on their first championship in 53 years. He also specifically gave a shoutout to Dolan, posting a picture of them posing together in the second slide.
“Congratulations to the New York Knicks on winning the championship,” he wrote. “To James Dolan and the entire organization – you did it! To the players, coaches, and the greatest fans in basketball – this one’s for you New York! [basketball and Statue of Liberty emojis].”
From January 2014 to July 2024, Joel performed a residency at the Garden. He would play at least one show every month during that span. The last show of the residency marked his 150th concert at the World’s Most Famous Arena.
The Knicks’ first championship in 53 years

At long last, the Knicks’ longstanding championship drought is over. They won their first title since 1973 on Saturday, June 13, 2026, in San Antonio.
It wasn’t always pretty, but Jalen Brunson willed his team to victory behind his 45-point performance in Game 5. The Knicks were down by five points at halftime, but they ultimately won the game 94-90.
Game 5 was a nail-biter. New York appeared sluggish early on, only scoring 13 points in the first quarter and 37 in the first half. And yet, they were only down by five points to San Antonio at halftime.
It was another instance of late-game heroics, as the Knicks outscored the Spurs 57-48 in the second half. They held Victor Wembanyama somewhat in check. He only had 19 points and made seven of his 19 shots. Dylan Harper was still a difference maker off the bench, logging 25 points in 31 minutes.
