Right now, the Portland Trail Blazers remain without an official head coach after the news of assistant coach Tiago Splitter being hired by the Chicago Bulls to fill their vacancy. Splitter had been serving in an interim capacity after the controversy involving Chauncey Billups came to light in October of last year; he’s been on official leave ever since.
Meanwhile, Blazers team owner Tom Dundon is in the midst of celebrating a Stanley Cup victory by the Carolina Hurricanes, whom he also owns. The Hurricanes put the finishing touches on their first Stanley Cup victory in 2006.
Does this mean that the Blazers will be able to soon put more focus on the hiring of their next coach now that the Hurricanes have taken care of business by winning the Stanley Cup? There has been a prevailing thought that Dundon doesn’t want to spend much money on the Blazers, given numerous recent examples of belt-tightening across the board.
Now that Carolina’s postseason run has concluded, Dundon could soon shift focus on whom the new leader for his NBA club will be, especially after the loss of Splitter.
In the meantime, Dundon recently explained how lucky he feels to be able to call himself an NBA owner.
“I am extremely lucky to be able to do it,” Dundon said. “How could you regret being able to own an NBA basketball team? It’s a privilege. So, no one likes when people say bad stuff about them. But in the relative to all the other problems in the world, it’s not a big problem.”
“The judgment and empathy you need to be successful, the hard work you have to put in, works across basketball and hockey — and every other business,” Dundon said.
