Ex-GM questions Bo Bichette expected Mets contract decision report

The New York Mets had a solid weekend, winning two out of three games against the divisional rival Atlanta Braves but still sitting at 32-39 on the season. Overall, it’s been a disappointing year for the Mets, including for free agent signee Bo Bichette, who came over from the reigning AL Champion Toronto Blue Jays.

Although he has started to round into form in recent weeks, Bichette has still struggled overall this season, and recently, reports emerged from Bob Nightengale of USA Today that he might opt to turn down his player option with New York this offseason and look to hit free agency again.

However, one person confused by that idea is former MLB general manager Steve Phillips.

“I really can’t imagine why any executive would think that the season he’s having would be worthy of opting out, considering that he’s going to walk away from so much money that he’s not going to find in free agency from anybody else. Nobody’s going to give him $40 million a year. Nobody is going to give him $30 million a year. In fact, I don’t think anybody’s going to give him $20 million a year,” said Phillips, per MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, at this point, it’s hard to imagine Bichette commanding a salary anywhere near his current figure this offseason if he were to once again hit free agency. While his bat has woken up a bit in recent weeks, he’s still not producing at the level the Mets were anticipating when they signed him last offseason, and thus, it would likely make more sense, at least financially, for him to opt in and continue on his current deal.

In any case, the Mets will next take the field on Monday on the road against the Cincinnati Reds.
