Phillies rumors: Latest report suggests Philadelphia won’t trade for Tarik Skubal

The Philadelphia Phillies have been up and down as of late, going 2-3 over their last five games and currently sitting at 38-33 on the 2026 MLB season. While the Phillies have shaken off their brutal start to the season, they still have quite a bit of ground to make up in the NL East to catch up to the Atlanta Braves.

Some have wondered if a blockbuster trade might be on the horizon for the Phillies as the trade deadline approaches, and the biggest name on the market is Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers.

However, recently, those hoping the Phillies would enter the Skubal sweepstakes had some cold water dumped on the idea by Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they look for some swingman depth, but I don’t know that they’ll be prioritizing starting pitching — or that they have the depth required to trade for a strong starting pitcher,” reported Varnes.

Indeed, the Phillies are a bit short on depth both on the main squad and in their farm system that might be appealing to opposing teams looking for assets in exchange for their star players, so a trade for any All-Star caliber player, let alone someone as elite as Skubal, figures to be off the table.

The Phillies’ pitching staff has been rounding into form over the last several weeks, while the bats have also started to heat up, and as is so often the case, a lot of Philadelphia’s success or failure in the postseason could simply hinge on the team’s ability to get hot at the right time.

In any case, the Phillies will next hit the field on Monday evening at home against the Miami Marlins.
