Despite being a diehard Texas Longhorns fan, Matthew McConaughey is happy for the New York Knicks after their first championship win in 53 years at the NBA Finals.
The Oscar-winning actor congratulated the team on X, formerly Twitter, doubling down by saying, “America’s more fun when New York’s happy.”
It is safe to say that New York is happy. They will get to celebrate the team further on Thursday, June 18, when a celebratory parade is held.
McConaughey is most associated with his Longhorns fandom. He is also a minority owner of Austin FC, Austin’s MLS team. Additionally, he is a fan of the Washington Commanders.
The Knicks’ first championship win in 53 years

The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in five games to win the franchise’s first title since 1973. Presumably, McConaughey, who was born and raised in Texas, was rooting for the Spurs. However, even he had to tip his hat to New York.
Game 5 was played in Texas in front of a raucous Frost Bank Center. The Spurs came out hot early, leading by 10 points after the first quarter. They also held the Knicks to just 13 points in the first quarter and 37 total in the first half.
Finals MVP Jalen Brunson cemented his legacy with his performance in Game 5. He scored a game-high 45 points while making more than half of his shots. Throughout the entire series, he averaged an impressive 32.6 points per game. The championship win marked an end to Brunson’s fourth year with the Knicks. They’ve made the playoffs in all four years of his career in New York.
The Knicks started the series well. They won the first two games of the series, both played in San Antonio, before the series came to New York City.
While they lost Game 3, they staged an incredible and history-making 29-point comeback in Game 4. It was capped by OG Anunoby’s miraculous tip-in.
