Rafael Devers trade looking like lose-lose for Red Sox, Giants on 1-year anniversary

Monday marked the one-year anniversary of the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants’ Rafael Devers trade. Both franchises haven’t really gotten what they have wanted out of the deal.

Over the year since, both the Red Sox and Giants have losing records. Neither side is particularly close to making a playoff run, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

“The Giants have gone 69-93 since the trade and are tied for the 2nd-worst record in MLB (29-43),” Nightengale wrote. “The Red Sox have gone 81-77 and are 29-40 and in last place.”

In the deal, San Francisco received Devers while Boston got Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks, James Tibbs and Jose Bello. Over his first 162 games with the Giants, Devers has hit .235 with 29 home runs and 84 RBIs. To his credit, the infielder leads the league with 21 doubles. But the Giants infielder hasn’t yet lived up to his Red Sox heights.

At least he is still on the roster. Harrison was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers while Tibbs was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Hicks shipped to the Chicago White Sox. Bello remains in Boston’s organization, but he doesn’t rank inside their top 30 prospects, via MLB Pipeline.

When the deal was made, the Giants thought they were getting a superstar who would bolster their playoff push. Playing in the NL West, it made sense to make a big swing. And he may end up being that player. But San Francisco has struggled to find any success since.

The Red Sox were looking for a reset. But now essentially all of the players in the deal are now no longer on the team. A blockbuster at the time, the deal is now looking more monotone than expected.
