40-year-old Cabo Verde keeper is shutting out Spain at World Cup

The Spain national team is the favorite to win the 2026 World Cup, and most thought they got a cushy start to Group H, taking on Cabo Verde. However, through one half of play, the score is 0-0, and that is in large part thanks to 40-year-old Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinho.

Vozinho, who plays in the second division of Portuguese football for a team called Chaves, is absolutely standing on his head against one of the best attacking teams in the world.

The Cabo Verde (or Cape Verde) keeper is 40 and has played professional football since 2007. He became his country’s No. 1 keeper in 2013 but has never played in a World Cup. The tiny nation is a group of islands off of the west coast of Africa and has just under 500,000 people who live there. Spain, by comparison, has around 50 million, and its seventh-biggest city, Murcia, is about the same size as Cabo Verde. They are the third-smallest country to ever play in the World Cup.

Vozinho’s team is ranked 64th in the latest FIFA rankings, while Spain is third.

One of the issues for Spain is that its two best attackers, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, were not in the starting 11. Both have been dealing with injuries of late. While they are both on the bench, neither featured in the first half. If the score line stays this close longer, it won’t be a surprise if manager Luis de la Fuente subs one or both of them on in the second half.
