Alex Sarr undergoes foot surgery after freak offseason injury

Washington Wizards promising young big man Alex Sarr will be sidelined for the time being after he suffered a foot injury during offseason workouts, the team announced on Monday. The former No. 2 overall pick underwent successful surgery, and now the rehab period begins. It was not immediately clear how long the recovery period would be, only that he is expected to be ready for the start of the 2026-27 season.

Alex Sarr is coming off a 2026-27 season that was plagued with various injury issues, and he was eventually shut down by the Wizards for the final nine games of the year. He was limited to only 48 games after playing in 67 during his rookie season.

Although the big man dealt with setbacks, he still managed to put up a strong season statistically. He averaged 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 blocked shots with splits of 48.2 percent shooting from the field, 33.3 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 69.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Sarr is considered to be part of the Wizards’ young core along with other promising players such as Trey Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, Bub Carrington, Will Riley and Tristan Vukcevic. The Wizards also have the No. 1 pick in what’s expected to be one of the deepest and talented NBA Drafts in recent memory.

The team is looking to take a major leap next season in the Eastern Conference standings following their trade deadline acquisitions of Trae Young and Anthony Davis. The Wizards have now missed the postseason for five consecutive years.
