Even though goaltender Jacob Markstrom was re-signed by the New Jersey Devils to a two-year contract extension, reports have surfaced in recent days that they’re entertaining trade offers for him.
Former Devils goaltender Kevin Weekes, now an NHL Insider, indicated over the weekend that the Devils were fielding offers for the Swedish goaltender, though no deal was imminent.
“Per sources, although a deal isn’t imminent, I’m told the NJDevils are gauging market interest from clubs on G Markstrom,” Weekes wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Additionally, Brian La Rose of Pro Hockey Rumors indicated recently that the timing of Weekes’ report makes sense and that Markstrom could benefit from a change of scenery.
“Accordingly, the timing of this report makes a bit of sense for the Devils. If there’s a team wanting to add a starting goalie (with the belief he’ll rebound with a fresh start) but don’t want a long-term commitment, New Jersey can position Markstrom as that potential alternative,” La Rose wrote on Pro Hockey Rumors. “Again, he’s hardly worth peak value (certainly not the first-round pick plus a roster defender in Kevin Bahl that Fitzgerald gave up to get him) but if Mehta is trying to open up some cap flexibility this summer, this could be a way to do so. Having said that, moving Markstrom would leave the Devils pretty thin between the pipes once more.”
Markstrom, who was acquired by the Devils from the Flames before the 2024-25 NHL season, went 23-19-1 with a 3.07 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage with one shutout this season. He’s under contract through 2028 with a $6 million salary cap hit.
