Flyers rumors: The pending UFA most likely to be re-signed

For the first time in several seasons, the Philadelphia Flyers managed to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and electrified their fans thanks to their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series victory over the in-state rival Pittsburgh Penguins.

However, the Flyers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semifinal by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, who swept them aside in four games.

There were many positives to look back on in the season that was for Flyers general manager Daniel Briere, who could be considering bringing back veteran forward Luke Glendening, a pending UFA who was claimed off waivers from the divisional rival New Jersey Devils.

“Among the Flyers’ pending unrestricted free agents, Luke Glendening is the likeliest to return, according to a team source,” wrote Flyers beat writer Kevin Kurz via The Athletic. “Glendening not only provided a spark for the Flyers’ fourth line down the stretch, he had good chemistry with Sean Couturier and Garnet Hathaway — two players who were really struggling up until the Olympic break. But that’s still up in the air. The Flyers will likely explore what other fourth-line wing options are out there on July 1, or simply decide to try and fill that void in-house.”

Glendening scored two goals while adding three assists in the 18 games he played in a Flyers uniform after being claimed. He began his career as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Red Wings, and later played for the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning. In 934 career NHL games, Glendening has scored 85 goals with 90 assists.
