Mariners’ latest roster move hints at JP Crawford returning soon

The Seattle Mariners are gearing up for a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. When they do battle, the Mariners may have some extra reinforcements.

Infielder Patrick Wisdom has been optioned to Triple-A, via Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. While the corresponding move is not yet concern, it opens a path for JP Crawford’s return to the Mariners.

Crawford has been on the injured list since early June with a hand contusion. He only needed the minimum stint though and is now poised to come back. The Mariners will be cautious and pay close attention to Crawford and his hand. But the fact he has been able to handle ground balls points to his ability to contribute at the major league level once more.

When Crawford fielded those ground balls, he did so at third base. The Mariners recently called up top prospect Colt Emerson, who has been handling shortstop duties. It seems likely that Seattle will move Crawford to the hot corner so that Emerson can continue manning shortstop.

Alongside his work in the field, Crawford has hit .228 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs and a stolen base over 55 games. He is only three home runs away from breaking his 2025 total. Furthermore, despite his injury, Crawford’s 31 runs scored remains tied for third-most on the team.

The Mariners are entering their series with the Orioles holding a 37-36 record. While they’re leading the AL West, Seattle knows they need to be more consistent to be true playoff contenders. At least working in their favor is the seemingly imminent return of Crawford.
