The MLB trade deadline isn’t until August 3, but teams around the league may have to make a decision on being buyers or sellers sooner, rather than later. One club is rumored to be in the early stages of finalizing a decision, as the San Francisco Giants‘ President of Baseball Operations, Buster Posey, is said to be considering making moves before the trade deadline.
Reports indicate that the Giants have not yet confirmed they will be sellers at the deadline, however, a final decision could be made relatively soon, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. At the very least, there is speculation that Posey and the front office are trying to see what kind of offers San Francisco could receive for some of their players.
“The San Francisco Giants have not fully committed to becoming sellers at the trade deadline,” reported Rosenthal. “But they are moving closer to making that determination. In recent days, the Giants have put out feelers on some of their players, testing the waters for potential deals, according to people briefed on their discussions.”
Rosenthal reveals which players could be dealt in a trade before the deadline, claiming that the two most obvious options are second baseman Luis Arraez and left-hander Robbie Ray, who are both set to be free agents after the 2026 season. Meanwhile, first baseman Rafael Devers and shortstop Willy Adames are not likely to fetch high values in a trade due to their underperforming campaign, and San Francisco has no interest in dealing right-hander Logan Webb.
Buster Posey and the organization are potentially aiming to sell at the trade deadline due to the struggles the Giants face this season. The club is 16 games back in the NL West, and is nine games behind for a Wild Card spot. As the 2026 campaign progresses, the likelihood of San Francisco turning things around and reaching the playoffs is dwindling.
