Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer drops wild starting pitcher minimum proposal

With the Toronto Blue Jays in the midst of a disappointing season, one part has been star pitcher Max Scherzer, as his 2026 campaign has been plagued by injuries. Though Scherzer made his injury return to the Blue Jays, he would have an interesting take on a new rule for starting pitchers.

Scherzer would give his thoughts on what he wants to see added to the game, and mentioned a minimum for pitchers to throw at least 100 pitches before being taken out of a game. The 41-year-old would say that he wants to see the game “empower” the starting pitchers.”

“I would love to see some type of pitch minimum brought into the game,” Scherzer said, via JomBoy Media, who credits MLBFits on X, formerly Twitter. “So that way the starter has to go out there and throw 100 pitches, something that I hate seeing within the game, I get why it’s going on, but I would love to see things to be trying to empower the starting pitcher, try to get starting pitchers back to throwing, trying to get to seven innings, 105 pitches, and have that kind of be a standard throughout the game.”

“If you’re giving up, let’s say, two, three runs, and you’re at 90 pitches, no,” Scherzer continued. “You got to keep going back out there.”

A look at Max Scherzer’s season with the Blue Jays

There is no doubt going to be major questions regarding Scherzer’s idea for every starting pitcher to throw at least 100 pitches in a game before being taken out, with the one being health. At any rate, it remains to be seen if his pitch will ever be considered by the MLB.

Looking at Scherzer’s season so far with Toronto, he has recorded a disappointing 10.23 ERA to go along with 14 strikeouts and a 1-4 record in starts.

Missing a significant portion of the season with forearm and ankle injuries, he made his return in starting last Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The veteran went 3.1 innings and 82 pitches, letting go of five runs, walking three batters, while striking out five, as he looks to bounce back.
