With the Philadelphia Phillies getting hot as the season goes on, especially compared to the disappointing start, one player who is still looking to overcome his slump is star Trea Turner. As the Phillies are led by interim manager Don Mattingly, he would speak on Monday about Turner’s struggles.
Mattingly would be asked about Turner and if there is any feeling on him getting over his slump, and if not, will there be a change to move the veteran shortstop out of second in the batting order. The interim manager would stand firmly behind Turner, expressing confidence in him, as he currently sports a .219 batting average to go along with seven home runs and 21 RBIs.
“I want to show confidence (in him) because I feel confident,” Mattingly said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I wouldn’t say the things I say if I didn’t feel confident that Trea was going to find it and be swinging more consistently and better as we go through the season. Like when you do certain things to guys, it basically tells them you don’t believe in them, and that’s where I’m not going.”

Don Mattingly continues on the struggles of the Phillies’ Trea Turner
While there is no doubt that Turner has disappointed thus far with the Phillies, Mattingly and others feel confident that he will get back to his usual ways. As Philadelphia has been dealing with offensive issues all season, Mattingly doesn’t see the view of putting that all on Turner.
“All of the sudden, everybody is talking about Trea, but Trea’s not the reason when we don’t score,” Mattingly said, via North Penn Now. “He’s not the only reason when things like that happen. Trea’s a big piece of what we’re going to be, and if we’re really successful, we’re going to need Trea. So, I’m not giving up on Trea. I’m not moving him right now. That’s just the way I feel about it.”
It remains to be seen when Turner will turn it around for the Phillies, as the team starts a new series against the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
