The Texas Rangers received difficult injury news Monday, placing Corey Seager on the 7-day concussion-injured list before their series opener vs. the Minnesota Twins.
Seager’s designation stems from a violent home-plate collision last Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. The shortstop collided with Royals catcher Carter Jensen while trying to score from first on a double by Brandon Nimmo.
Despite the impact, Seager stayed in the game and later hit a home run. However, the situation changed the following day when he woke up with significant jaw and rib soreness.
Those issues later progressed into mild concussion symptoms. Manager Skip Schumaker kept the veteran shortstop out throughout the weekend series vs. the Boston Red Sox before the club made Monday’s roster decision.

The move adds to Seager’s frustrating season. He returned June 5 after missing 19 games with lower back inflammation but played only five games before this setback. Seager is hitting just .186 with nine home runs and 24 RBI in 47 games.
The Rangers’ roster moves also included Josh Smith’s return from the 10-day injured list. Smith gives the Rangers additional defensive flexibility, but replacing the 32-year-old’s offensive production remains a major challenge for a lineup already dealing with injuries.
Texas continues to manage absences involving Evan Carter and Michael Helman, adding more strain to the depth around the roster. Seager’s placement gives him time to progress safely through the concussion protocol set by Major League Baseball.
For the Rangers, the short-term plan now leans heavily on Ezequiel Duran and Smith. Texas sits at 35-36, tied with the Athletics and one game behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West, so it needs both players to provide steady defense and enough offense while the 2023 World Series MVP works back from a concerning collision.
