2-time All-Star center no longer views Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic as NBA’s top player

Denver Nuggets superstar big man Nikola Jokic remains one of the best players in the game today, and to many, is the No. 1 overall.

But for former Indiana Pacers star center Roy Hibbert, the Serbian is no longer the top player in the league.

“He’s up there, but top 3, top 4,” Hibbert said during a recent appearance on the “Run It Back” show. “He’s [Jokic] one of the top players, but I don’t think he’s the top right now.”

The topic of who the best player in basketball is always going to be contentious, especially when there are clearly several players with cases to be made.

It was also not that long ago that Jokic won his most recent NBA Most Valuable Player award, during the 2023-24 campaign. Since then, he has finished second in the MVP voting twice. Some believe that Jokic is a victim of voter fatigue, having won the MVP honor three times in his NBA career thus far.

Oklahoma City Thunder star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won the Michael Jordan Trophy in each of the last two seasons, with Jokic finishing runner-up both times.

Hibbert, perhaps, would have a much different opinion of the Nuggets’ franchise player if Denver had been more successful of late. After the Nuggets won the NBA title in 2023, they were knocked out of the NBA Playoffs in the second round twice and in the first round once.

In the recently concluded 2025-26 NBA season, Jokic nearly averaged a triple-double for the entire campaign, putting up 27.7 points to go along with 10.7 assists and 9.9 rebounds through 65 games.
