Why Padres’ Craig Stammen is suspended for Monday’s Cardinals clash

As San Diego Padres pitcher Ron Marinaccio hit Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson in Saturday’s 9-3 win, it led to the ejections of Marinaccio and manager Craig Stammen, plus some suspensions. With the news of Marinaccio and Stammen being suspended for the Padres, here is how it all went down.

Marinaccio would hit Henderson inside in the ninth inning, with many saying how intentional it was, which could’ve stemmed from San Diego shortstop Xander Bogaerts getting hit in the head in the fifth inning. The umpires would eject Marinaccio for the throw, leading to Stammen arguing with the officiating crew, leading to his own ejection.

Announced on Monday, Marinaccio has been suspended for three games, and he’ll appeal, via Bob Nightengale, while Stammen was suspended one contest, which is being served on Monday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Marinaccio will appeal,” Nightengale wrote on X. “Padres manager Craig Stammen also suspended 1 game and must serve it tonight.”

Echoed by Marinaccio, Stammen would say after Saturday’s game that it wasn’t intentional to hit Henderson, who had his 100th career home run last Friday against the Padres. The strategy is to pitch Henderson inside.

“We need to pitch [Henderson] inside. If he gets extended, he’s going to do what he did yesterday,” Stammen said, via MLB.com. “That’s part of pitching, is to be able to pitch inside. Pitch between the plate and the body, and it hit him. I don’t know why they tossed [Marinaccio]. I guess maybe because Bogaerts got hit. But it’s frustrating that they would make a decision that quick.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how Marinaccio’s appeal will be ruled on by the MLB and if he’ll miss time for the Padres.
