Texas Tech releases statement after ‘difficult situation’ with Brendan Sorsby

College football can now fully move on from the polarizing issue centered on quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

It was revealed on Monday that Sorsby will apply for the NFL Supplemental Draft following a legal battle with Texas Tech and the NCAA over his eligibility due to his gambling addiction.

Texas Tech announced that Sorsby will not suit up for the squad despite a court decision that granted him a temporary injunction and ordered him reinstated after being ruled ineligible by the NCAA.

Texas Tech issued a joint statement from school president Lawrence Schovanec and director of athletics Kirby Hocutt amid the latest development, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

“When Brendan’s lawsuit resulted in the granting of a temporary injunction, we found ourselves in a difficult situation. With his health and wellness as our top priority, we supported him in spite of very different perspectives and opinions,” said Schovanec and Hocutt.

They stressed that the health and well-being of the students remain a top priority for Texas Tech, while also assuring their support for the 22-year-old Sorsby.

“Our position was challenged by many, but our support for him never changed. We will continue to extend all available resources that Brendan had as a student and athlete to ensure his transition is as successful as possible,” added the joint statement.

Sorby checked into a rehabilitation facility in April. According to the investigation by the NCAA, he admitted to placing over $90,000 in bets, including wagers on his own team. He spent two years each at Indiana and Cincinnati before joining the Red Raiders in January.

He filed a lawsuit against the NCAA and secured a temporary injunction in Lubbock County. It gained heavy backlash from fans and programs in the Big 12.
