Texas Tech football backup QB gets injury update amid Brendan Sorsby situation

Brendan Sorsby will not be running the show from under center for Texas Tech football in the 2026 season after all.

The controversial signal-caller is reportedly turning pro, with plans to join the NFL supplemental draft.

There are still plenty of questions concerning Sorsby and his future, and the same can be said about the Red Raiders.

Among these is the situation of Texas Tech football’s quarterback room now that Sorsby is apparently leaving Lubbock for the NFL.

With Sorsby on his way out, Texas Tech appears to be likely to turn to Will Hammond for its quarterback needs. However, he does not seem to be on track to be ready by Week 1 of the 2026 college football season, as he continues to recover from a knee injury.

“Sources tell @On3 that backup QB Will Hammond’s recovery from a torn ACL in his right knee continues to go well. Expectation remains he will return for Week 3 vs. Houston. Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis is expected to start opening weeks of season,” Pete Nakos of On3 shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

Hammond saw action for eight games with the Red Raiders in 2025 before he went down with the said injury. He threw for 680 passing yards and seven touchdowns against three interceptions on a 63,3 percent completion rate.

That brings the Red Raiders to a likely decision to give Tulsa Golden Hurricane transfer Kirk Francis the keys to the offense on the field. In three seasons with the Golden Hurricane, Francis generated 3,045 passing yards and 18 touchdowns with 13 interceptions on a 58.4 percent completion rate.

Texas Tech will open its 2026 campaign with a game at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock against the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Sep. 5.
