Reds’ Elly De La Cruz gets potential injury rehab assignment date

The Cincinnati Reds are struggling since star infielder Elly De La Cruz went down with an injury. Cincinnati fans are getting some good news, as their star appears to be on the mend. The club released a new injury update about De La Cruz.

“Ran the bases, took grounders and batting practice on June 15. Could begin a rehab assignment on June 19,” MLB.com reported following the team injury report.

De La Cruz has been dealing with a hamstring strain. He last played on May 31, in a game against the Atlanta Braves. He is hitting this season at a .280 batting average.

The infielder is a key part of the team’s offense. He is an expert baserunner; De La Cruz has 10 stolen bases already this campaign. He also has 12 home runs and 37 RBIs this season.

Cincinnati fans can’t wait until he is back in the lineup.

“I’m getting close,” De La Cruz said, per MLB.com, about his overall health.

Without the star, the Reds have been struggling. Cincinnati is last in the National League Central. The club has a 34-37 record on the season.

“We’ve talked with him several times because the one thing I don’t want him to ever feel is one, that we’re not listening to him, and two, that we don’t want him to play. We’re dying for him to play,” team manager Terry Francona said. “I just don’t think you can do what’s right [only] when it’s convenient. That’s the best way. I think down deep, he understands. I just think he wants to play, desperately, and I respect that a lot. He really just wants to play.”

The Reds have dropped seven of their last 10 games.

Another reason why the team is struggling is due to pitching injuries. Starter Hunter Greene and reliever Emilio Pagan are both on the injured list. Greene has missed the entire season due to elbow problems.

Greene is closing in on a rehab assignment.

“(Greene) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with the ACL club and pitch three innings on June 18,” the outlet stated.

Cincinnati plays the New York Mets on Tuesday.
