The San Antonio Spurs not only lost in the NBA Finals, but they were bested by the New York Knicks in just five games. Nobody is writing off their long-term potential, though. The squad led by Victor Wembanyama is still a ways away from reaching their ceiling, and championships are almost certainly in their future.
Rich Paul thinks that the team’s core has the makings of a dynasty eerily similar to the Spurs of old, who won five championships from 1998 to 2014. Of course, Paul has seen plenty of winning in his days connected to the NBA as the agent of four-time champion LeBron James.
“Fox [is] Parker, Castle [is] Leonard, Harper [is] Ginobili, and Wembanyama [is] Duncan,” Paul said about this iteration of the Spurs team in comparison to the dynasty that came before them. “It is that framework all over again in a way… When you take a step back from that, you kind of get, okay, this is what that could be a glimpse of.”

De’Aaron Fox struggled in the NBA Finals at various points, but he has historically been a reliable point guard with blazing speed and the clutch gene. Both Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper are young and still developing their jump shots. Still, they’ve both already proven themselves as up-and-coming stars, Castle because of his defense and slashing, and Harper because of his body control and fluidity. Wembanyama’s unicorn skill set is different from the fundamental game that Tim Duncan brought to the table, but many view Duncan as the best power forward ever, and Wembanyama certainly has the potential to become an all-time great.
