Flyers governor drops Matvei Michkov truth bomb after tough sophomore season

Matvei Michkov burst onto the scene with the Philadelphia Flyers as a rookie in 2024-25, recording 63 points in 80 games. He finished fourth in Calder Trophy voting and earned a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team after establishing himself as one of the league’s brightest young stars.

With expectations soaring entering his second season, the Russian forward faced a more challenging campaign in 2025-26. Michkov finished with 51 points in 81 games before chipping in just a single assist in eight Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

Despite the statistical decline, Flyers governor Dan Hilferty remains fully confident in the 21-year-old’s future.

“When you think about Matvei Michkov — he scored 51 points in what you’d call sophomore slump season,” Hilferty said in an interview with The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz.

“People are saying, is Matvei going to be OK? Our feeling is yes. He’s already rolled up his sleeves and is training at a level he needs to, to compete at the NHL level.”

Michkov’s relationship with head coach Rick Tocchet drew attention throughout the campaign. Tocchet publicly challenged the young forward’s conditioning in February, creating a storyline that eventually prompted general manager Danny Briere to address the situation publicly.

Hilferty, however, never viewed the circumstances as a major concern.

“Think about where we were as a team at that moment,” he explained. “We had a pretty solid start. We were in the early middle stages of the season, there was talk about us as a potential playoff contender, and then all of a sudden we hit a wall.

“I think it coincided where maybe Matvei was feeling some frustration on the ice, with his own play, maybe where he was being used and how he was being used. In that context, no, I was not upset.”

Instead, Hilferty believes the adversity ultimately served a purpose.

“It really gave us as a leadership group an opportunity to sit down and talk about it,” he said. “I think in the long run, it will make Matvei a better pro.”

Michkov saw a reduced role during his sophomore season, both at even strength and on the power play, which contributed to his lower offensive totals.

Still, the Flyers remain convinced that one of their franchise cornerstones is on the right path. While his second NHL season didn’t meet the lofty expectations established by his rookie campaign, Philadelphia’s leadership believes the lessons learned this year will help Michkov become a more complete player moving forward.
