While Dana White was happy with how UFC’s White House Freedom 250 event went, it allegedly almost ended in tragedy as FBI Director Kash Patel claimed Tuesday the agency thwarted “planned attacks” during the show.
Five people from Ohio, Missouri, and California were arrested for their involvement in these alleged “planned attacks.” ESPN’s report relays via ABC News sources that “the plot included explosive drones that were to target buildings in the area of the event.” In total during the event, 14 arrests were made. These were made for various charges, ranging from disorderly conduct to drug possession.
A lot of it is still being kept under wraps by the FBI and law enforcement. However, more details are expected to be shared later on Tuesday.
Patel revealed that they were first tipped off about the potential threat on Wednesday, June 10. He praised the work of the FBI and the Department of Justice for their quick work.
“On June 10, FBI and our law enforcement partners became aware of a potential threat to the UFC America 250 event in Washington, D.C. involving individuals outside of the National Capital Region – and thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold,” he wrote. ” While the result represented the best of investigative work, it was also nothing out of the ordinary for this law enforcement team – we are built to detect, respond to, and bring to justice those who threaten the lives of American citizens – particularly during large gatherings like the historic UFC 250 fight.
“That’s exactly what we did here. I want to thank our great agents and partners, this work remains ongoing and we will continue to update the public as permitted,” he continued.
UFC Freedom 250 was held on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday, June 14, on President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
