Brooks Koepka’s 5-word mic drop on U.S. Open playing status after injury scare

It is U.S. Open week on the PGA tour, which means one of the biggest events in the world will take place at Shinnecock Hills in Long Island, New York. J.J. Spaun is the defending champ, winning his first major in 2025. Spaun aims to defend his trophy, but had to say goodbye to it on Monday.

Another former major winner, Brooks Koepka, is coming off an injury heading into this week. His return to the PGA Tour has seen some great golf from the five-time major winner, but no wins just yet. At the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto, Koepka was forced to withdraw with a hand injury. The 36-year-old was in contention for the win heading into the weekend with a score of -8, but shot a 72 on Saturday. He was not able to go on Sunday. Here is what he told reporters after the third round, via ESPN.

“I don’t know what it is,” Koepka told reporters. “I’m struggling to grip the club with my ring finger and pinkie finger, so can’t grip it. So the club is kind of just, my fingers would come loose. It was kind of numb. I don’t know what the deal was, but hopefully we’ll figure it out.”

It looks like the fingers did heal fast because he is going to play this weekend in Long Island.

“I’m gonna go this week.”

Koepka is a two-time winner at this event and a three-time PGA Championship champion. In July, he will have a chance at his third different major at The Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. Koepka could be a part of a featured group on Thursday as he is paired with Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup.
