Despite improved play over the last few weeks, the San Francisco Giants continue to slide down the NL West standings. The veteran-laden team is now 29-43, 16.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and currently in fourth place. With the MLB trade deadline creeping closer with each passing day, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey has some tough decisions to make. However, according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, San Francisco has “zero plans” to trade Logan Webb, as Foul Territory shared on their X (formerly Twitter) page.
“When I spoke with someone yesterday who’s familiar with the Giants’ plans, he said there are zero plans to trade Logan Webb,” Rosenthal stated on Foul Territory.
Rumors have begun to circulate that the team’s three highest-paid players, Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, and Willy Adames, are on the trade block. For an offense that has underperformed to this point, that makes a lot of sense. All three hitters are 30 or older, and it could be time for Posey and manager Tony Vitello to start leaning into their younger players. While the Giants have an outside chance of getting back into the playoff hunt, the NL’s current field of postseason contenders is deep.
Webb, however, is a piece for that long-term vision. While the right-hander turns 30 this November, top-level pitchers usually perform well until at least their mid-to-late 30s. Webb’s style is a throwback, as he pitches deeper into games and employs a unique arsenal to keep hitters off balance. If the Giants decide to tear it all down, keeping Webb would still make sense, as he’d be a veteran leader to what could be a young pitching staff. If Posey and Vitello hope to lead San Francisco back to the top of the MLB, allowing Webb to lead their starting staff would be an excellent decision all around.
