There has already been a major trade from new Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Chayka, who dealt goaltender Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers for goaltender Sam Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae, and a 2026 third-round pick.
Meanwhile, there continues to be smoke surrounding the future of longtime Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly, whom the club selected in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft. While there are still several years left on his contract with a $7.5 million salary cap hit, there appears to be a strong chance that both sides move on from one another before long.
According to Maple Leafs beat writer Jonas Siegel, Rielly could very well end up on the West Coast with a Western Conference club after having given the Maple Leafs a list of teams he’d be willing to accept a trade to.
“The 32-year-old has a full no-move clause,” Siegel wrote via The Athletic. “His agent, J.P. Barry, gave Leafs management a list of teams that would interest Rielly. My understanding is that most of those teams are all in the Western Conference, but there’s also a sense that there could be flexibility as talks evolve. For instance, if Leafs GM John Chayka comes back to Barry with a team that’s not on the list but that made a decent trade offer, it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s a ‘no.’ The San Jose Sharks make sense as a possibility. But I don’t believe the Vancouver Canucks are on the list.”
He’s scored 98 goals with 451 assists in 951 career games with the Maple Leafs.
