Flames rumors: The 1 condition that could lead to Blake Coleman trade

There were multiple changes to the Calgary Flames this season, including the trades of Nazem Kadri back to the Colorado Avalanche along with the trade of MacKenzie Weegar, whom they acquired as part of the blockbuster deal for Matthew Tkachuk in 2022, to the Utah Mammoth.

Despite being heavily engaged in trade talks, veteran Blake Coleman wasn’t moved by GM Craig Conroy. Coleman, who signed with the Flames as an unrestricted free agent in 2021 after helping the Tampa Bay Lightning win the Stanley Cup in consecutive years, has one year left on his contract with a salary cap hit of $4.9 million.

According to NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Flames would be willing to make a “hockey trade” if it made sense for both sides.

“The Flames could also gauge the trade market over the next few weeks,” LeBrun said via The Athletic. “I’m told both options remain on the table. Calgary is willing to make a hockey trade involving Coleman but not a picks deal. The Flames have so many draft picks, it doesn’t make sense for them to gather more. But if there’s a hockey trade that makes sense, they would look at that. If a trade doesn’t materialize, though, the Flames would also be open to talks of an extension with Coleman.”

Coleman, who was taken with the 75th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils, has appeared in 693 career regular season games with the Devils, Lightning, and Flames. He’s scored 170 goals with 155 assists, and has also added 12 goals and 19 assists in 65 career playoff games.
