Yankees’ Austin Wells gets injury update amid cervical headaches absence

The New York Yankees were forced to put Austin Wells on the injured list in early June when he began suffering from cervical headaches. However, his time away from the diamond may be short lived.

Wells is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, the team announced. The catcher was able to do baseball activities on Wednesday, showing his gradual recovery from the headaches, via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.

New York will still be cautious when it comes to Wells’ return. With their eyes focused on the World Series, they want as many wins as possible. But the last thing they want is for Wells to suffer a setback. The fact his injury is head related creates some pause as is.

Still, the Yankees will have a much better understanding of where Wells stands once his rehab assignment begins. Once he is able to comfortable swing a bat, run the bases and catch behind the plate, the backstop will find himself back in New York.

He’ll be returning to a .166 batting average with four home runs and seven RBIs over his first 47 games in 2o26. The Yankees will obviously be expecting more. But after hitting 21 home runs and driving in 71 RBIs, New York has reason to believe in their backstop.

The first order of business is simply getting back on the field. With Wells’ rehab assignment starting on Tuesday, that could come sooner rather than later. New York will wait to see how the catcher and his headaches react to live action before making any decisions.
