Lakers franchise legend is retiring, but it’s not LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of potentially making big changes with the roster to improve the team in general for next season. With the front office busy focused on the upcoming NBA Draft, free agency, and possible trades, a franchise legend has decided to call it a career, and no, it is not LeBron James.

The Lakers announced on Tuesday that public address announcer Lawrence Tanter, who has held that position for 43 seasons, is retiring from that role. Jeannie Buss issued an official statement, claiming how grateful she is for Tanter’s work with the organization.

“Since the 1980s, LT narrated every chapter of Lakers basketball, connecting generations of fans, players, coaches, and staff while becoming a trusted and unforgettable part of the Lakers experience,” said Buss. “I am incredibly grateful for everything he has given to this franchise.”

While Tanter is retiring as the Lakers’ public address announcer, he will be taking on a different role with the club, according to Law Murray of The Athletic. Lawrence Tanter will become the new Special Advisor for Game Presentation.

“The Los Angeles Lakers announce that longtime public address announcer Lawrence Tanter will retire after 43 seasons and move into a role as Special Advisor for Game Presentation,” reported Murray.

In the Lakers’ press release, Tanter’s new role is described as a sort of mentor to help ensure the future public address announcer remains at a high level.

“Following 43 seasons behind the courtside microphone, the beloved ‘Voice of the Lakers’ will retire his gameday role,” said the press release. “In his new position, Tanter will lend his unparalleled expertise and institutional knowledge to help shape the future of the Lakers’ game presentation experience.”
