Kylian Mbappe makes all-time French history with 2nd goal vs. Senegal

The 2026 FIFA World Cup may have just started with teams still playing their first matches, but the tournament got started with a bang in France’s first match against Senegal in Group I.

Entering Tuesday’s portion of matches, four players had already scored multiple goals in their first match. Sweden’s yasin Ayaji, New Zealand’s Elijah Just, Germany’s Kai Havertz, and the United States’ Folarin Balogun all led the 2026 FIFA World Cup with two goals scored. In the first match of the day, however, another well-known player joined that group.

After a scoreless first half, France’s Kylian Mbappe scored two of his team’s three second half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Senegal. The first came in the 66th minute, while the second came in the 96th minute, just one minute after Ibrahim Mbaye’s goal to get Senegal on the board.

Mbappe’s first goal brought him into a tie with Olivier Giroud as France’s top goal-scorer in the nation’s history and a tie with Just Fontaine as France’s all-time goal-scorer in World Cups.

The second goal by MBappe officially passed Giroud as France’s top goal-scorer and Fontaine as France’s World Cup goal scoring leader.

In addition to that, Mbappe tied Gerd Muller for third place on FIFA’s top goal-scorers list in World Cup history. With his 14th goal, Kylian Mbappe now sits just two goal shy of tying Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the all-time leader in goals scored in World Cup history.

France still has two more group stage matches remaining before the knockout stage begins on June 28, 2026.
