Norway’s Erling Haaland notches first-ever World Cup goal against Iraq

The 2026 World Cup is off to a blazing hot start! Every match seems to be a spectacle to watch, outside of about two blowout games by Sweden and Germany. The USA has three points, Germany won 7-1, Spain and Cape Verde tied, and Australia upset Türkiye. Nobody knows what will happen!

On Tuesday, Norway and Iraq are in the middle of an intense battle in New England. Erling Haaland has already scored two goals, and Norway leads 2-1 against Iraq at halftime (At time of publication).

Here is Haaland’s first-ever World Cup goal for one of the best strikers in the sport.

This match is crazy so far. There have been three goals in the span of 14 minutes, starting with the Haaland goal above. Then, just 10 minutes later, Aymen Hussein, Iraq’s best player, scored in the 39th minute to even the score at 1-1.

Iraq’s first goal of the 2026 World Cup was a beauty, but the momentum was not enough as Haaland and Norway had other plans.

Haaland took advantage of the mistake for his first World Cup brace in the 43rd minute. Haaland is not a favorite to win the Golden Boot award because Norway would need to go on a run; however, he could finish in the Top 3 of goals scored just from his group-stage goals alone. Haaland will certainly score at least one more goal in this tournament, and he could even finish with a Hat Trick against Iraq. With the way the first half ended, more goals will come.

Kylian Mbappé scored two goals for France in their win over Senegal earlier on Tuesday. It will be tough to beat out Mbappé for the Golden Boot, but if Haaland and Norway prevail, he could easily take it, and nobody would be shocked.
