Former college football coach and Alabama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has announced that he doesn’t support the Protect College Sports Act. On Tuesday, Tuberville voiced his issue with the Protect College Sports Act on the Senate floor. The bill was introduced by Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell, and Tuberville said the bill goes too far.
On the Senate floor, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) says he cannot support the Protect College Sports Act, as he stands between two displays: on the right, his narrow Student Athlete Act (1X transfer/5-yr eligibility), and on the left, the PCSA.

The Protect College Sports Act, sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz and Marsha Blackburn, would provide the NCAA with limited antitrust exemptions to enforce several eligibility and roster regulations. The legislation includes a five-year eligibility limit, tighter transfer restrictions, a prohibition on former professionals competing in college athletics, and measures aimed at curbing in-season coaching departures.
Tuberville laid out his issues with the proposed legislation in a letter to athletic directors earlier this month. He argued that the legislation could create more problems than it solves for college athletics. The letter outlined several concerns with the legislation. Tuberville argued the bill would expand eligibility and transfer exceptions, leave the question of athlete employment status unresolved, and increase litigation risks for schools. He also raised concerns about federal oversight through a congressional commission, as well as long-term restrictions on compensation, conference realignment, media rights, and NIL regulations.
“These are not separate ideas you can pick and choose to support or oppose. They are bound together in a single bill, and a vote to advance it is a vote for every one of them.” Tuberville said to close the letter.
