The Philadelphia 76ers gave fans a lighter offseason moment Tuesday, as Nick Nurse and president of basketball operations Mike Gansey took in a Philadelphia Phillies game together.
The Phillies opened their three-game set currently underway with the Marlins in dominant fashion, getting a 7-0 shutout win Monday, and now lead 7-0 again in the bottom of the fourth inning currently, giving Gansey a lively first look at his new city’s baseball atmosphere. For the 76ers, the visit also served as a public welcome for their new basketball operations leader.
Gansey recently arrived to the 76ers after a long front-office run with the Cleveland Cavaliers. His first Phillies game gave the organization an easy way to introduce him to the city’s sports culture and offered an early look at his partnership with Nurse.
The 2019 NBA champion head coach with the Toronto Raptors played tour guide for the outing, bringing Gansey into a setting that is deeply meaningful to Philadelphia fans. The 76ers shared the moment on X, formerly Twitter, prior to the duo’s appearance on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
“first @Phillies game for Mike Gansey!
tune into @NBCSPhilly at the top of the 5th inning to hear from Coach Nurse & Mike Gansey!”

Nurse then delivered the message directly in the team’s video:
“It’s coach Nurse here with new president Mike Gansey, showing him the ropes, bringing him to his first Phillies game. We’re going to be on television, top of the fifth inning. We’re excited to be here, and go Phillies!”
The timing gave the moment more meaning. The 76ers are now in a transition period after hiring Gansey, following the team’s decision to part ways with Daryl Morey after its second-round playoff exit.
Gansey faces pressure to shape the roster around Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Paul George, and V.J. Edgecombe. His relationship with Nurse should help connect basketball operations with the coaching staff.
Tuesday’s ballpark trip was a small introduction, but it fit. Gansey is learning Philadelphia, and Nurse made sure it started with the city’s sports heartbeat.
